Introduction

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was established in 1997, with an intake of 60 and is currently headed by Dr W Yerriswamy. Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) program is a blend of Mechanical Engineering and Management. The department imparts education in the field of Industri al Engineering and Management to the students through its well established Undergraduate and Research programmes. A Research Centre under Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, offers M.Sc. Engineering by Research and Ph.D. programs. The department has laboratory facilities with modern equipment that help in carrying out research in the areas related to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

The department has 7 faculty members of which 4 are Ph.D., awardees and the remaining are pursuing Ph.D. The student-faculty ratio is 25:1. The faculty is actively involved in research work. From our Research Centre 10 doctoral degrees have been awarded, two MSc Engineering by research and 20 research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. Faculty members are actively involved in publishing research papers in various National /International Journals and Conferences. A continuous interaction with industries is established through MOUs, industry visits and internships. The students are consistently getting ranks in university exams.. Several research and development projects in niche areas have been successfully executed by the department with support from various funding agencies such as DST and AICTE. DST alone has sponsored projects worth INR 2.25 crores. Our faculty has implemented 10 consultancy work in industries.

    Department has spacious class rooms with adequate seating capacity. Each class room is provided with Computer system, LCD Projector with screen facility for Audio/ Visual purpose. In addition Green glass board and Podium are provided in each class rooms.

    Department Library

    The department has well maintained library with more than 2118 books. The previous year’s project reports and synopsis are also made available in the department library. Laboratory Manuals, Journals / Magazines, e – journals access, hand outs, conference proceedings are made available in the Department Library. Library is kept open from 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM on all working days (Mon-Fri), and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on (Saturday).

    Scope & objectives

    This Forum provides ample opportunity to students to discover the talent hidden in them. This forum gives a platform to students, to exhibit technical skill, presentation skill, communication skill in organising various events for students in the technical field.

    Research Initiatives

    VTU Research Centre in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was started in the year 2006 with provision for Ph.D. (Full Time / Part Time), and M.Sc (Engg.). Since then the research facility is available for research scholars to carry out research in their specific area. Students and research scholars are encouraged to take up interdisciplinary research in various domains like Mechanical Sciences, Data Analytics, Management Science. Three faculty members are guiding Ph.D. students in various fields. Open Seminars for Research Scholars will be conducted at regular intervals to assess their Research progress.
